"Sweet"
Alice Harris, who
was named the Lieutenant Governor's California Woman of the Year in
2002 for her endless efforts over the last 35 years to clean up the
Watts neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles, needed some help
of her own after a freakish storm (known as a supercell) dumped massive
amounts of rain and flooded her home, as well as her entire community
last year.
When the home of Sweet Alice Harris and her family — husband
Alan, daughter Alvenia and Alvenia's two children, Warrick, 12, and
Ashley, 5 (who suffers from severe asthma attacks and could no longer
live with her grandparents because of the dust and debris left in
the home from the flood) — suffered water damage, they lost
their furniture and carpet, and for two months had to live out of
one bedroom. Unfortunately, insurance did not cover the damage to
the Harris home, nor to the neighbors' houses which were also damaged
in the flood. The beleaguered-looking block was in need of a sweet
miracle.
As a single, homeless mother in the 1960s, Sweet Alice turned her
life around and made it her mission to help others in need. She formed
Parents of Watts (POW) over 30 years ago, and their organization now
reaches out to the entire community. Sweet Alice has set up over 15
programs which provide emergency food and shelter for the homeless,
conducts health seminars, provides legal and drug counseling, operates
a program for unwed mothers, houses battered women and children and
prepares young people for the job market and college. Sweet Alice
wants to keep kids in school, off drugs and off the streets.
Because of her tireless contributions, the Watts community is forever
in Sweet Alice's debt. Now it's time for Sweet Alice and her family
to be on the receiving end of something special. During the "reveal",
members of the community came out to welcome her and her family back
home, including LAPD Chief of Police William Bratton, Assemblyman
Mervyn Dymally (52nd District) and Councilwoman Janice Hahn (15th
District).
